A key aspect of data science is the ability to communicate stories with data. In this workshop, you will explore how to create compelling data visualizations using your own datasets. You'll gain an understanding of the principles of data visualization and storytelling, applying them to craft effective visual representations. Finally, you'll discover how to easily build powerful interactive visualizations and dashboards using Python/panel, and how to make them accessible online.

For whom?

All UvA-researchers can apply for this workshop, with priority to members of the UvA Data Science Centre. Interested MA students are also welcome. It is required that you have some basic comfortability using Python.

Programme

  • 10.00 - 11.00: Principles of data visualization; and drafting visualization
  • 11.00 - 12.30: Data storytelling; and refining visualization
  • 12.30 - 13.00: Lunch break
  • 13.00 - 14.00: Interactive visualizations and dashboarding in Python/Panel (and comparison with RShiny)
  • 14.00 - 15.00: Develop your own Panel dashboard to visualize or collect data
  • 15.00 - 16.00: Deploying dashboards without servers (Pyodide)

Plenary instruction is combined with hands-on practice with your own datasets in small groups.  The workshop will cover how interactive visualizations and dashboarding in Python/Bokeh differs from RShiny. You will learn how to run Bokeh Apps in the browser via Pyodide (no server required).

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to create powerful storytelling visuals with your own research data.
