How the lottery works

Register for the Bachelor's in Political Science (English track) in Studielink between 1 October 2026 and 15 January 2027.  Once you have registered, you automatically participate in the lottery.

If you register after 15 January 2027, you cannot take part in the lottery for the 2027–2028 academic year.

You are allowed to register for up to two numerus fixus programmes in Studielink. If you receive an offer for both programmes, you may only accept one offer.

Unweighted lottery

The programme uses an unweighted lottery. This means:

• Your grades do not matter for the lottery.
• Everyone who registered on time gets a random ranking number.

In mid-April 2027, you receive your ranking number in an email from Studielink.

What your ranking number means

If your ranking number is between 1 and 345:

• You are directly offered a place in the programme.

If your ranking number is 346 or higher:

• You are placed on a waiting list.
• You can only be admitted if applicants ranked between 1-345 decline their offer. If an applicant declines, the offer will be made to the next applicant in the ranking (e.g. if applicant 345 declines, applicant 346 receives an offer).
• Many students withdraw between 15 April and 1 August 2027, so there is a real chance that a place will become available for you.

If a place opens up for you, you will receive an email offer.

After you are admitted

Once you are admitted:

• You must send certified copies of your diplomas and transcripts, and the original of your English test score by regular post. For the full list of documents, see the Application and Admission page.
• You will receive a conditional and/or unconditional acceptance letter by email.
• Only after you have secured your place in the programme can you apply for housing and a study visa (if you need one).

Selection attempts: how often can you try?

You can participate in the lottery for the UvA Bachelor’s programme in Political Science twice.

Please note that you may register for a maximum of two numerus fixus programmes per academic year across the Netherlands.

A selection attempt counts if:

• You have an active application for the Bachelor's in Political Science in Studielink after 15 January 2027, even if you do not complete the admission process.
• You withdraw your application after 15 January 2027.

A selection attempt does not count if:

• You withdraw your application in Studielink before 16 January 2027.
