Are you passionate about programming or other digital skills, and eager to teach others? Grow your expertise and make an impact by leading workshops for fellow researchers. The University Library offers 6 training seats to become a certified Carpentry instructor.

This 2,5-day training prepares you to teach workshops, using evidence-based practices and open source materials.

Requirements

You are a UvA researcher or staff member and have some experience with Python, R, Unix shell, git, SQL, OpenRefine or spreadsheet software. However, you certainly do not need to be an expert! The Carpentry community welcomes beginners, because transferring knowledge is a great way to learn.

It is appreciated you are prepared to commit yourself to give at least 1 or 2 carpentries workshops over the coming two years that can (also) be communicated through the UvA Data Science Centre.

Time investment

  • 16 hours of instructor training, spread over 2 or 4 days;
  • Attending a welcome session (1 hour);
  • Attending a teaching demo session (1 hour + preparation for a 5-minute teaching demo);
  • Gain your first experience (‘Get involved step’), ranging from attending a 1-hour online Carpentries meeting to assisting with or instructing an official Carpentries workshop.
